The two-minute clip shows Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill once again rally his team around him to defend the universe and embark on a mission that could mark the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them.

The new trailer also sees Zoe Saldaña return as Gamora, despite being killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. As Marvel keeps exploring the concept of the multiverse, we’ll see a younger version of Gamora lead a shady group of space people called the Ravagers.

In addition to Pratt and Saldaña, the third Guardians of the Galaxy film will see Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper return to their respective roles, and it will also feature Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, and Sylvester Stallone.

That is the word from James Gunn who has confirmed that the upcoming third chapter of Guardians of the Galaxy will be its last. 

The franchise first hit screens in 2014, becoming the 10^th film in the MCU. Since then, the team comprised of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer has also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. 

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 grossed more than $863 million at the global box office in 2017, with Vol. 3 due out next year. Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillian, and Sean Gunn set to reprise their roles. Will Poulter has also joined the cast. 

As the official trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, director James Gunn said, “This is the end of that story. I’m sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn’t mean everybody dies.”

The filmmaker was previously dismissed by Disney in 2018 after controversial old tweets emerged, but was reinstated following a massive fan campaign and criticism from several Hollywood stars. 

“For a while I wasn’t going to do this movie. Then I came back,” Gunn said. “And the reason I knew I needed to come back was to tell this story and, in some ways in particular, I have a special closeness to the character of Rocket and I knew I needed to finish to tell his story.”

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 is out on May 5, 2023.

In the Marvel comics, Warlock was introduced as an artificially created perfect human being, who rebelled against his creators and managed to escape them. His appearance in the MCU was teased in a post-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) mentioned creating the perfect sovereign, capable of defeating the Guardians.

According to Deadline, the director James Gunn started a lengthy search for an actor who would play Warlock back in August. He met up with several other actors before Poulter won the part, and he’s expected to join the rest of the cast when the production kicks off in November.

Poulter rose to prominence with roles in We’re the Millers and The Maze Runner franchise, and he has one BAFTA award under his belt. His credits also include The Revenant, Detroit, and Midsommar, and we’ll next get to see him in Hulu mini-series Dopesick.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is yet to have a fixed released date but production is set to begin in February 2021.

Gunn told his fans on Twitter that he’s still planning to release The Suicide Squad on August 6th, 2021 and that the editing process has been pretty smooth so far.

“Right now there’s no reason for #TheSuicideSquad release date to move. We are on or ahead of schedule. We were extremely fortunate to wrap shooting & set up editing from our homes (due to a post-production team & studio with foresight) before quarantine,” wrote the director.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 still doesn’t have an official release date, but Gunn said that his plans for this movie are “exactly the same as they were before coronavirus”. Disney recently shifted release dates for several Marvel Phase 4 projects, but they still haven’t assigned a date to the next Guardians film.

He later added that while plans for both films hadn’t changed so far, it’s not completely his call.

The reason for the latest delay is Gunn’s other superhero project – DC’s The Suicide Squad. Gunn recently confirmed to a fan on his Instagram account that he will not begin working on Guardians of the Galaxy until the completion of filming and editing of The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad has begun filming earlier this month and it will feature Pete Davidson, Idris Elba, and Peter Capaldi, who formerly starred in Doctor Who. also, Margot Robbie and Jay Courtney will reprise their roles as Harley Queen and Captain Boomerang from 2016’s Suicide Squad alongside Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis. 

Gunn has recently revealed that the writing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took him a whole year. “This one (Suicide Squad) was short! A few months. Guardians Vol. 3 took a year, The Specials took a week and Super took maybe three weeks. It’s always different,” said the filmmaker.

Since his firing, many people have spoken out in the director’s defense. Cast member Dave Bautista has been particularly vocal and even threatened to leave if Gunn’s script wasn’t used.

Fans of the franchise have decided to get even more proactive and have crowdfunded to get a “Rehire James Gunn” billboard put up outside of Disneyland, California. They managed to raise $4,850 last month to pay for the billboard and are now trying to get another one put up.

On their funding page, the fans wrote that the purpose of the campaign was to “raise money for Rehire James Gunn billboards outside Orlando and Anaheim Disney Parks” with the goal of putting up “one billboard near each park for at least one month, preferably during the holidays to maximize exposure.”

They added: “Should we fail to raise enough money for at least one billboard for one month, all money will be refunded to contributors…Please contact us if you are willing/able to help. Every little bit helps! Thank you to all of our Guardians of the Galaxy family!”

The Marvel project has been plagued with controversy since the dismissal of its director, James Gunn, in July. Following the dismissal of the filmmaker who had helmed the 2 previous films in the Guardians, several of the franchise’s cast members signed their names to a letter calling for Gunn to be reinstated.

A meeting ensued between Disney and the 51-year-old, where the studio held to its decision.

On Friday, Marvel and Disney dismissed around 20 crew members who had assembled in Los Angeles for pre-production, telling them that they are free to look for other work.

Despite the temporary halt — and no replacement for director having been named — production is expected to begin around the beginning of next year, and will still utilize Gunn’s original script.

“I spoke to Chris Pratt the day after it happened and he’s a bit religious so he wanted time to pray and figure it out, but I was more like, ‘F**k this. This is bulls**t.’ James is one of the kindest, most decent people I’ve met.”

He then threatened to leave if Gunn does not return: “Where I’m at right now is that if [Marvel] don’t use that script, then I’m going to ask them to release me from my contract, cut me out or recast me.

“I’d be doing James a disservice if I didn’t.”

Unfortunately, reports suggest that it is unlikely that James Gunn will be rehired.
