House of the Dragon looks to have found a permanent home.

After the way Game of Thrones concluded its eight seasons, there was speculation whether fans would tune into to watch the prequel series. Based on the numbers for the show’s premiere last week, the answer was a resounding yes!

10 million viewers watched the series opener within 24 hours of its launch, setting an HBO record. In the days that followed, the viewership doubled to 20 million in the United States alone.

As such, the network has decided to renew House of the Dragon for a second series after just one episode.

“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” stated Francesca Orsi, the Executive VP of HBO programming. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

Considering season one required 10 months to produce, it is possible that season two will only hit screens in 2024.

Kate Winslet gave us one of her best projects in recent memory with the HBO crime drama Mare of Easttown, and she’s coming back for another one. The two-time Emmy-winning actress is set to star in the limited series based on Hernan Diaz’s bestselling novel Trust.

Trust centers on a wealthy financier, who asks his secretary to ghostwrite his memoir after a novel based on his life presents him and his wife in a negative light. As she embarks on this journey, she comes to realize she’s rewriting history – and his wife’s place in it.

Trust has been described as “an unparalleled novel about money, power, intimacy, and perception” and its author Hernan Diaz is coming on board as one of the executive producers. Winslet is also producing the project, which is currently in the early stages of development, as HBO looks for a writer to adapt the book for the screen.

Winslet is no stranger to collaboration with HBO, and she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her performances in the network’s mini-series Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). We’ll get to see her in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water later this year and she’s also attached to the upcoming Lee Miller biopic opposite Jude Law.

HBO will not be bringing The Outsider back for a second season.

Multiple outlets confirm that the premium cabler has passed on another season of the Stephen King horror crime drama.

Per Deadline, the studio behind the show will be shopping The Outsider Season 2 to other outlets after HBO passed, so technically, the season, which is already underway, could find a home elsewhere. If the show continues, it will center around Cynthia Erivo’s character Holly, as it “expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.”

“We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason, Andrew, and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” said an HBO spokesperson in a statement to Deadline.

The first season of The Outsider followed Ben Mendelsohn’s detective who teams up with Erivo’s Holly, a private eye with the special gift of being able to track down a supernatural serial killer.

HBO adapts another Michel Crichton novel to the small screen. Deadline reports that the prolific author’s Sphere is now getting the treatment by Westworld writer and producer Denice Thé.

This is the second time that Sphere is being adapted into the screen. In 1998, it was released as a movie featuring Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharon Stone, Liev Schreiber, and Peter Coyote. However, it was not very successful, both financially and critically.

The story follows a team of scientists sent by the U.S. Navy to explore a spacecraft found in the bottom of the ocean. Once they enter the ship, they discover that it is not an alien ship but a ship from the future that lay on the ocean floor for hundreds of years. They also discover a mysterious sphere, and after one of them enters it, they encounter what seems to be an alien entity named Jerry. The entity seems to manifest their most primal fears.

Thé will be the series showrunner. He is working with Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films, as well as Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey and Warner Bros. Television for the project.

HBO has renewed We’re Here for a second season.

The series was created by Stephen Warren and Johnnie Ingram and stars RuPaul Drag Race alums Shangela, Eureka O’Hara, and Bob the Drag Queen traveling around the Bible Belt and conservative areas across the country. Upon arrival, they give drag makeovers to local LGBTQ and straight residents who perform a live show at the end of the week.

Bob told Variety that they had many run-ins with police while filming, “We got the cops called on us three times in Branson. They just didn’t like that we were there and they just called the cops on us. We beat it before the cops showed up. We were riding dirty.”

Season 1 saw the queens traveling to Gettysburg, PA, Twin Falls, ID, Branson, MO, Farmington, NM, and Ruston, LA. The season finale, which aired on June 4, featured the queens’ struggles and successes and ended in celebration and pride of their journey.

“We’re Here resonates in ways we had hoped for but couldn’t really have anticipated,” said executive vice president of HBO programming Nina Rosenstein. “The stories of our small-town drag daughters created an incredibly positive communal experience. We can’t wait for Bob, Shangela and Eureka to continue their journey helping others find their voice.”

The official trailer for HBO’s Perry Mason, everyone’s favorite TV lawyer is dark, to say the least.

Perry Mason stars Mathew Rhys (The Americans) as defense lawyer Mason in Los Angeles in 1931. HBO described the series as, “While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong.”

Based on characters that were created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, Perry Mason follows the origins of the fictional legendary criminal defense lawyer. Perry Mason was also a courtroom drama that ran from 1957-1966 starring Raymond Burr. Rhys is set to play a younger version of the character.

“When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself,” the official logline reads.

In addition to Rhys, Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), E.B. Jonathon, Shea Whigham, Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Eric Lange, and Robert Patrick also star in the series.

The series was created by Rolin Jones (The Exorcist) and Ron Fitzgerald (Westworld), and directed by Timothy Van Patten (Game of Thrones).

In the trailer, we see Mason and the characters he interacts with while investigating the kidnapping and death of an infant. The coroner tells Mason, it’s “the worst thing you’ve ever seen,” and Mason responds with, “What do you know what I’ve seen?”

The series will be released on June 21 and you can watch the trailer below.

HBO has ordered 10 episodes of the yet to be titled comedy. According to Variety, the show will explore a dark mentorship that forms between a Las Vegas diva (Smart) and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old.

“I am so thrilled to be making this show with our incredible partners at HBO Max and Universal TV, and it is a dream to write for the incomparable Jean Smart,” said Downs in a statement. “It is an honor and a privilege to craft and portray complex, female characters. For far too long, male voices dominated the space, both on-and-off screen, and thankfully that has finally changed. I’m sure Lucia and Jen agree, but unfortunately, they only gave us this much room for a quote. Sorry girls!”

Smart most recently starred in the DC Comics series Watchmen.

HBO shares the first look at its forthcoming true-crime docuseries I’ll Be Gone In the Dark.

The first trailer for the small screen adaption of the late Michelle McNamara’s acclaimed book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer is here and it reveals just how far McNamara was ready to go to put a name to a Northern California serial killer and rapist in the ’70s and ‘80s.

Per HBO, the series will also give a voice “to the survivors and their families, documenting an era when sex crimes were often dismissed or hidden in shame. A timely inquiry into our macabre preoccupation with true crime and a cautionary tale of the dangerous lure of addiction, the series is a riveting meditation on obsession and loss, chronicling the unrelenting path of a mysterious killer and the fierce determination of one woman to bring the case to light.”

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is set to debut June 28.

Jean Smart boards a new and forthcoming single-camera comedy from Broad City alums Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky.
