The National Film Registry was launched by the Library of Congress in 1988, and it just celebrated its 35th anniversary. Up to 25 culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films are added to the Registry each year, as a way of preserving America’s film heritage.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden stressed the importance that films have played in reflecting stories of America’s cultural heritage for over 125 years, before announcing the class of 2023.

“We are proud to add 25 diverse films to the National Film Registry as we preserve our history through film. We’re grateful to the film community for collaborating with the Library of Congress in our goal to preserve the heritage of cinema for generations to come,” said Hayden in a press release.

In addition to Home Alone, Apollo 13, 12 Years a Slave, and Terminator 2, Disney’s classics Lady and the Tramp and The Nightmare Before Christmas also made the cut, along with Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Love & Basketball, and Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet.

When Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced their idea to give Home Alone a reboot treatment, he described it as reimagining for “a new generation”. They’re also considering doing the same with some of the other family-friendly franchises from the Fox library, including Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen.

A possible answer is delivered by non-other than the original Kevin McCallister. Macaulay Culkin, then a child star, now a 38-year-old man, has shared a photo of how he imagines the reboot on Twitter. In the photo, Culkin is shown sitting on a sofa in boxers, a laptop is perched on his knees, his belly sticking out, a pasta dish in his hand and a somewhat morose expression on his face. It’s a direct shout out to a famous scene in the movie when Kevin stuffed himself with junk food.

“This is what an updated Home Alone would actually look like,” Culkin wrote mockingly in the post. In the next tweet, he wrote: “Hey Disney, call me!”

The first two films in the franchise were a huge success and became Christmas classics. The third movie and the subsequent direct to TV movies accepted with less enthusiasm.

Disney+ is brining back Home Alone as well as other assets from its recent acquisition of the Fox library. This will include reboots of four franchise also including Night At the Museum, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Cheaper By the Dozen.

The announcement was made by Disney CEO Bob Iger Tuesday, who said that the new streaming service will be a reimagining of several kid-friendly titles for “a new generation” of youngsters. 

According to Iger, the decision to bring back these titles are part of the network’s “focused on leveraging Fox’s vast library of great titles to further enrich the content” on Disney+. 

According to Deadline, in its first year of operation, Disney+ will house more than 7,500 episodes of TV and 400 movies. The service is slated to launch November 12.

Reynolds will produce and potentially star in the upcoming project with an awfully familiar plot. Stoned Alone revolves around a 20-something pothead who misses his flight for a holiday vacation. The protagonist doesn’t see this as the biggest tragedy in the world. He decides to simply go back home and enjoy this new-found free time by getting high. His plans are derailed by intruders who break into his house. Stoner comes up with an elaborate plan to protect his sweet home, high as a kite the whole time.

Relative newcomer Augustine Frizzell will direct the comedy, based on the script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Not much is known about Stoned Alone at this point, but fans are already asking the most important question. Will Macaulay Culkin give it his blessing and agree to make a cameo? The role in Home Alone launched him into stardom, but the actor said he would do a remake only if it was set in the woods, Rambo style. Let’s hope Reynolds and his team are taking notes!
