This isn’t the first attempt to give Speed Racer a worthy live-action adaptation. The Wachowskis released their own take on the beloved franchise in 2008, starring Emile Hirsch in the role of Speed Racer.

Its star-studded cast also included Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Matthew Fox, but that didn’t stop it from being a huge misfire. The film was a major box office failure, grossing $93 million worldwide on a $120 million budget.

Apple TV+ will have a chance to right this wrong and give Speed Racer fans a live-action adaptation that they deserve. Abrams will executive produce the project alongside Martinez and Fitzgerald, who are also expected to serve as co-showrunners.

Duster is set in the 1970s and follows a getaway driver who works for a crime syndicate in the Southwest. Abrams serves as creator, co-writer with LaToya Morgan, and producer for the series, while Holloway will portray the role of the driver according to Deadline.

Reportedly, the series will focus on horror elements and will feature a “darker reinvention” of the titular character John Constantine. Abrams intends to cast an actor of color in the lead role hopes to land someone “similar to a young Riz Ahmed.”

John Constantine is a character from DC Comics who first appeared in 1985’s The Saga of Swamp Thing. He is portrayed as a magician and occult detective who has a dark sense of humor and is prepared to do immoral things if that serves the greater good. Constantine received his own series of comic books, titled Hellblazer, in 1988.

Hellblazer was first adapted in 2005 with the movie Constantine, which was directed by Francis Lawrence and starred Keanu Reeves in the titular role. The movie wasn’t a big hit when it first came out but ended up having a cult following.

In 2014, NBC debuted a live-action Constantine TV series that starred Matt Ryan as the lead. The show was canceled after just 13 episodes due to poor ratings. Ryan’s performance, however, was praised by the fans, and he continued to portray the character in The CW’s Arrowverse. He had a guest role on Arrow and served as a regular in Legends of Tomorrow.

Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors), his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollet), and Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) take a road trip to search for Freeman’s missing father (Michael Kenneth Willaims). While on their journey, they’ll have to deal with racism and supernatural monsters.

Also starring in Lovecraft Country are Wunmi Mosaku, Aunjanue Ellis, Jamie Harris, and Abbey Lee.

“I love stories,” says lead character Atticus Freeman in the trailer. “Heroes go on adventures to other worlds to fight insurmountable odds. Stories are like a living thing,” he continues.

Supernatural elements seem to be a major theme in the new series as the trailer shows a body being dragged along the dock by unseen forces and a woman being thrown around a room.

Multiple outlets confirm that the streamer has given the green light to three drama series from Abrams and Bad Robot Productions. The three series are Overlook, inspired by Stephen King’s The Shining, Duster, conceived by Abrams, and the third is a DC Justice League Dark show.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under JJ and Katie,” Kevin Reilly, HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer, said in a statement. “What could be better than an original JJ idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic IP from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

The Oscar-winning filmmaker used his speech to detail his journey as a Mexican immigrant making movies in Hollywood and the world at large and reminded everyone who’s on the same path that their stories matter more than what other people may say about them.

“Believe in the stories you have inside and believe that we all can make a difference and we all have stories to tell and we all can contribute to the art and the craft and the world in any way we see fit,” said Del Toro in his emotional speech.

The legendary director, who gave us such film as The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth, was joined by filmmakers J.J. Abrams, André Øvredal and singer Lana Del Rey, who praised him for being unapologetically himself.

“In a culture of sameness, he’s completely himself. And that’s the greatest lesson I get from his tales… It’s a beautiful thing to be reminded that being different is a thing to be celebrated, and it’s a beautiful thing that we have you to always remind us of that each time we go back to your instantly classic films,” said Del Rey during the ceremony.

The psychological-horror thriller was given an eight-episode straight-to-series order. King penned all episodes himself. Abrams and his Warner Bros. TV-based Bad Robot Productions will produce. Moore will also serve as executive producers on the drama.

The series follows Lisey (Moore) two years following the death of her husband. The series explores a series of events that cause her to begin facing amazing realities about her husband that she had repressed and forgotten.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project marks the third series for Abrams’ Bad Robot at Apple, following Little Voice and My Glory Was I Had Such Friends. 

Moore’s TV credits include the HBO movie Game Change and As the World Turns.

So there’s really no surprise that very little is known about both character and story line, however, it is known that Zanbato centers around a young girl with lethal fighting skills. And Del Toro did add that the protagonist isn’t a ninja, “But… there are Ninjas in it.”

Del Toro has several projects currently in development including Pinocchio for Netflix and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark at CBS Films.
