The future of the Avatar franchise might not include its creator in the director’s chair.

It has been 13 years since James Cameron’s colony of blue creatures made their debut on the big screen. The movie raked in more than $2.8 billion at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time. Avatar also proved to be a critical success, earning nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

In light of the movie’s success, Cameron agreed to make four sequels which would expand the world of Pandora and the Na’vi species.

The first two sequels were filmed back-to-back between September 2017 and November 2018, with the intricate special effects work required resulting in a December 2021 release. COVID-19 had other ideas, however, pushing the film back another year. The first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is expected in theatres this coming December, while Avatar 3 will follow in December 2024.

Having come up with the idea of Avatar three years before releasing his blockbuster Titanic in 1997, Cameron has now hinted that he may decide to hand over the directing reigns for the franchise’s final two films.

“The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming,” he told Empire. “I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”

In the meantime, the Cameron-directed Avatar: The Way of Water is out on December 16, 2022.

Titanic went down in history as one of the most iconic romance movies of all time, and if you wish you could see him on the big screen next Valentine’s Day – we’ve got some news for you. The remastered version of James Cameron’s iconic film is coming back to theaters next year.

To mark the 25th year anniversary of Titanic, Paramount is bringing it back for another ride. The domestic date is yet to be set, but Disney is expected to release it internationally on February 10, 2023. A remastered version will be available in 3D 4K HDR and high-frame-rate.

Over 25 years after its release, Titanic is still fresh in people’s minds and we’re still having heated discussions about it. Many still wonder why Rose didn’t make room for Jack on that door, but James Cameron thinks it’s silly to be talking about it over two decades later.

“Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless… The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons,” Cameron told Vanity Fair.

Titanic came out in 1997 and starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose. It won 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and best director.

It’s been over a decade since James Cameron gave us his sci-fi epic Avatar, and this movie is still breaking records. After losing the title of highest-grossing film in history to Avengers: Endgame, the beloved film once again reclaimed it thanks to its reissue in China.

Avatar’s China reissue kicked off on Friday and added $12.3 million to the movie’s box office earnings in just two days, making it the highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office.

Jon Landau, who produced the movie alongside James Cameron, thanked the fans in China for supporting the movie and said they’re looking forward to sharing the follow-ups of this epic story.

“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” said Landau in a statement.

James Cameron previously discussed the reissue with China.org and stated that he believes that Avatar is still relevant today because it tackles important issues we face, including deforestation and climate change. Two Avatar sequels are currently in post-production, set to come out in 2022 and 2024, with an additional two on the way.

Avatar was a groundbreaking movie upon its release and ushered in the modern age of 3D cinema. It also held the title of the highest-grossing movie for a decade (until Avengers: Endgame came along). Director James Cameron is now filming the next four sequels in New Zealand.

Like any other movie, production was delayed due to COVID-19 but now Cameron gives us an update about the film’s status. Speaking with Arnold Schwarzenegger ahead of the 2020 Austrian World Summit environmental conference, Cameron said that filming of Avatar 2 is finished and Avatar 3 is 95% done.

“So, where we are right now [is] I’m down in New Zealand shooting. We’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10 percent left to go. We’re 100 percent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 percent complete on Avatar 3,” Cameron said. “COVID hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.”

Avatar 2 is now set for a December 2022 release, Avatar 3, 4, and 5 are set accordingly for a December 2024, 2026, and 2028 releases.

A power to terminate The Terminator? The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gale Ann Hurd, a screenwriter who wrote the script for the original Terminator alongside director James Cameron, has filed a copyright termination notice against Warner Bros., Disney and Skydance Media, claiming ownership of the film’s script.

Provisions of the United States copyright law allow the originators of a work to obtain ownership of it after a designated term – 35 years. If this claim is accepted Hurd will own 50% of the franchise while the other half will remain in the hands of Cameron. Further entries in the franchise after November 2020 would have to get both parties’ authorization. The proceedings may be complicated by international rights laws that differ from the U.S. law.

Hurd is not alone in the struggle to bring films’ rights back to the original writers. Her motion follows the success of screenwriter Victor Miller who got the rights for Friday the 13th. The writers of Beetlejuice, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Die Hard are currently in the midst of similar proceedings.

The upcoming film Terminator: Dark Fate, will not be affected and is due to be released on November 1.

Fans of James Cameron’s smash hit Avatar spent a whole decade waiting for its follow-up, but we finally know what to expect once this movie hits the theaters in 2020. Famous director shared details about upcoming sequel during an interview with Empire Magazine.

Jake and Neytiri will still be together the next we see them, but they won’t be alone. Cameron revealed the couple will have an eight year-old daughter in the upcoming installment, but won’t exactly be enjoying marital bliss.

“There’s a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline. I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the 8-year-old hiding under the structure and peeking in,” explained James Cameron.

This critical argument will be a part of an emotional rollercoaster that Jake is facing in Avatar 2, and the director promised he’s going to take him to some really dark places. We can’t wait to join him on this exciting journey on December 18, 2020 when this movie finally premieres.

Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel was the highest grossing film in the just concluded President Day’s Box Office Weekend. However, it is not a record to celebrate. At $33 million in 3,790 theaters, it was one of the lowest grossing leader during this weekend.

The film is a creation of Robert Rodriguez. It debuted on Thursday, bringing its total records through Sunday to $36.5 million. While the film led box office, it was a dismal record for the cyberpunk movie that cost $200 million to create.

During last year’s President Day weekend, Black Panther earned a record $242 million, which sets Alita’s numbers at just a fraction of what the Marvel superhero film earned.

At number two this year was Lego Movie: 2 which earned $27 million across 4,303 theaters. It was also a low record compared to its prequel, The Lego Movie, which debuted to $69 million in its first weekend four years ago. At third place was, Isn’t it Romantic, which earned $16 million in over 3,400 theaters.

Alita was produced by award winning producer James Cameron. It follows the life of a compassionate doctor who finds a heart and soul of a young woman with a mysterious past in one of his cyborg shells.

The movie debuted to poor ratings by critics, which is probably the reason for its low earnings.

“Two people could fit on that door!” is what majority of the audience said after watching Titanic. You know the scene (if you don’t, spoiler alert!). After the Titanic sinks, Kate Winslet’s character, Rose, is floating on a wooden door, while Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack sinks at the bottom of the ocean because there was no room for him. The thing is, almost everyone thinks there was. Now, the movie’s director James Cameron has decided to put an end to all the doubts and comment the scene in an interview for Vanity Fair.

“And the answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies,” said Cameron. “Very simple. . . . Obviously, it was an artistic choice, the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him.”

Cameron went on to say that he thinks it’s silly that there is a discussion about this particular scene and that the movie would be meaningless if Jack would have lived.

“I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so endearing to the audience that it hurts them to see him die. Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless. . . . The film is about death and separation; he had to die.” concluded Cameron.

James Cameron is currently busy with Avatar franchise, with the Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 being already in production. They are scheduled for release in 2020 and 2021 respectively. After the filming wraps up on these two sequels, there are two more planned for 2024 and 2025. Besides directing Avatar sequels, Cameron is also involved with the next installment of Terminator as a producer and creative consultant.
