]]>It has been 13 years since James Cameron’s colony of blue creatures made their debut on the big screen. The movie raked in more than $2.8 billion at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time. Avatar also proved to be a critical success, earning nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
In light of the movie’s success, Cameron agreed to make four sequels which would expand the world of Pandora and the Na’vi species.
The first two sequels were filmed back-to-back between September 2017 and November 2018, with the intricate special effects work required resulting in a December 2021 release. COVID-19 had other ideas, however, pushing the film back another year. The first sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is expected in theatres this coming December, while Avatar 3 will follow in December 2024.
Having come up with the idea of Avatar three years before releasing his blockbuster Titanic in 1997, Cameron has now hinted that he may decide to hand over the directing reigns for the franchise’s final two films.
“The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming,” he told Empire. “I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
In the meantime, the Cameron-directed Avatar: The Way of Water is out on December 16, 2022.

]]>To mark the 25th year anniversary of Titanic, Paramount is bringing it back for another ride. The domestic date is yet to be set, but Disney is expected to release it internationally on February 10, 2023. A remastered version will be available in 3D 4K HDR and high-frame-rate.
Over 25 years after its release, Titanic is still fresh in people’s minds and we’re still having heated discussions about it. Many still wonder why Rose didn’t make room for Jack on that door, but James Cameron thinks it’s silly to be talking about it over two decades later.
“Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless… The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons,” Cameron told Vanity Fair.
Titanic came out in 1997 and starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose. It won 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and best director.

We’re 100 percent complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95 percent complete on Avatar 3,” Cameron said. “COVID hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Further entries in the franchise after November 2020 would have to get both parties’ authorization. The proceedings may be complicated by international rights laws that differ from the U.S. law.
Hurd is not alone in the struggle to bring films’ rights back to the original writers. Her motion follows the success of screenwriter Victor Miller who got the rights for Friday the 13th. The writers of Beetlejuice, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Die Hard are currently in the midst of similar proceedings.

“I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later.
