National Treasure star discussed his plans for the future in a recent interview with Uproxx and said he’s ready to explore other arenas after starring in movies for 45 years.

“I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say, “Adios.” I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting,” said Cage.

Cage may be done with movies, but he’s not considering retirement just yet. He fell in love with television after his son introduced him to Breaking Bad last year, and he’s now thinking about branching out to television after seeing “what can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves.”

It will take some time for Cage to leave movies behind because he already has several new projects lined up, including Andrew Niccol’s crime thriller Lords of War and Oz Perkins’ horror Longlegs.

The official logline describes this film as the modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss. After centuries of servitude, he must figure out how to end his codependency and see if there’s a life outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness.

Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War), while Ryan Ridley (Ghosted) wrote the script, drawing inspiration from Robert Kirkman’s original idea. The film’s supporting cast includes Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Bess Rous.

Renfield will be released on April 7 by Universal Pictures, marking Cage’s first live-action film by a major studio in over a decade. He looked at performances of other famous movie Draculas, including Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella, and Gary Oldman, while preparing for the role, but he’s approaching it from a different angle.

“What makes it super fun is that it’s a comedy. And when you get that tone right – comedy and horror – like American Werewolf in London, it’s a blast… That’s what I’m looking for, something new to bring to the character, and also that perfect tone of comedy and horror,” Cage told Variety.

“I haven’t done a musical yet,” he said. “I’d like to try that. I’m not much of a singer. I did sing okay in Wild At Heart, I thought, but I’ve since blown my voice out singing ‘Purple Rain’ incorrectly in karaoke bars.” 

In the 1990 film, Cage sang a rendition of “Love Me” by Elvis Presley (who just so happens to be the father of his second wife, Lisa Marie). 

As for the musical role? The 58-year-old actor already has a part in mind.

“I think I’d make a good Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The Andrew Lloyd Webber production was adapted for the big screen in 1973, so there is room for a modern-day version. It was most recently done as a live concert version on NBC in which John Legend played the titular role and Sara Bareilles starred as Mary Magdalene.

Renfield draws inspiration from the original Dracula novel and centers on R.M. Renfield—an inmate at a lunatic asylum believed to be suffering from delusions, who actually turns out to be a servant of Dracula. According to Deadline, this project will take place during the present day and it won’t be a period piece.

Hoult is set to play the titular role, while Cage will join him as Dracula. Awkwafina’s role in this monster movie remains a mystery at this point. Chris McKay, best known for his work on The Tomorrow War, will be in charge of directing the film. Ryan Ridley wrote the script, drawing inspiration from an original story outline from Robert Kirkman.

Awkwafina has been on a roll since the beginning of 2021. She joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and voiced one of the main characters in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. We’ll soon get to see her in the Apple TV+ movie Swan Song, alongside Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage is set to star in the upcoming western The Old Way that comes from director Brett Donowho (Acts of Violence). The movie centers on gunslinger-turned-store owner Colton Briggs (Cage), who left his old ways behind and is trying to live a quiet family life. But Briggs’ idyllic retirement is cut short when his wife gets murdered by a group of outlaws. He decides to get back in the saddle to take his revenge while bringing along his 12-year-old daughter as his sidekick.

“Being born and raised in the West, this is another good match and long overdue,” said Cage about his venture in westerns via The Hollywood Reporter.

Further details about The Old Way, including the release date and rest of the cast, remain under wraps.

Nicolas Cage previously took on another West-related project several months ago. The 57-year-old will also be part of the frontier epic Butcher’s Crossing that will see him portray a buffalo hunter named Miller. His character welcomes a Harvard dropout to his team, and together they embark on a breathtaking journey across the West.

Cage’s other upcoming features include 2022’s action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he plays a fictionalized version of himself.

Cage revealed he won’t be playing the Tiger King in a series from Amazon and he implied the project has been shelved.

“We should clear the record,” Cage told Variety. “I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it to come together. They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.”

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness became a huge hit in 2020, with its story of the animal park owner and an alleged plot to murder an animal rights activist.

Cage recently received rave reviews for his performance in Pig and for his next role he’s playing himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The film will follow Cage, who agrees to be part of a paid appearance at a billionaire super fan’s birthday party, which ends up being part of a CIA sting operation.

In the film, Cage is set to star as actor Nicolas Cage. Desperate to get a role in a new Quentin Tarantino movie, Cage is also dealing with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter and is also under a mountain of debt. He finds himself forced to make an appearance at the birthday party of a Mexican billionaire, who happens to be a drug cartel kingpin who has kidnapped the daughter of a Mexican presidential nominee. Cage is then subsequently recruited by the U.S. government to get intelligence.

Harris will play Cage’s talent agent. Horgan has been cast as Cage’s ex-wife. Haddish is set to play an eccentric rogue government agent.

The script was written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, with Gormican attached to direct.

Cage will be playing a janitor working in an amusement park. His character is unnamed and is working there at nights to pick up some extra cash. One night, he gets trapped in the park with a gang of possessed animatronic monsters.

Kevin Lewis will be directing the horror thriller, which he has compared to “Pale Ride vs Killer Klowns from Outer Space.”

“For me, there was always one actor and one actor only who could make this movie work, and that actor is Nic Cage,” Lewis said about casting Cage in the lead role.

“I’m thrilled to be working with him and can’t wait to see him go up against Wally and his gang of psychopathic misfits,” he continued. “I see this movie as Pale Rider vs Killer Klowns from Outer Space.”

Cage will be co-starring alongside Emily Tosta, Beth Grant, Ric Reitz, and Chris Warner.

A release date for the film has not yet been announced.

The story will be about Joe Schreibvogel, a.k.a. Joe Exotic, an eccentric zookeeper in Oklahoma who tries to keep his park, while risking his own sanity. The series will explore how he came to be Joe Exotic and how he became lost in the character he created.

This will be Cage’s first regular television role of his career as he’s become known as a film actor in movies such as Leaving Las Vegas, Moonstruck, Raising Arizona, Face/Off, the National Treasure films, and the Ghost Rider films.

This is the second scripted series about Tiger King; the first was announced late last year and it’s based on the Wondery podcast “Joe Exotic” and it will star Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin.
