]]>In addition to beating the likes of Mank, Minari, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to win the biggest award of the night, Nomadland came out victorious in two more categories. Frances McDormand became one of seven people in history to win her third acting Oscar while Chloé Zhao became the second female filmmaker to walk away with the best director trophy.
Another historic moment came when Anthony Hopkins managed to beat the late Chadwick Boseman in the best actor category and become the oldest person to win this award. The supporting acting categories were much easier to predict and the awards went to the expected winners—Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Youn Yuh-jung (Minari).
The list of major winners at the ceremony included Emerald Fennell (best original screenplay for Promising Young Woman), Thomas Vinterberg (best international film for Another Round), and Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller (best adapted screenplay for The Father). Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sound of Metal, and Mank were amongst the movies with two awards, mostly in technical categories.
The 93rd Academy Awards were held on April 25th at Union Station and Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

]]>The list of winners at this ceremony was pretty colorful, and it didn’t give us any significant repeat winners—in addition to being named as the best feature of the year, Nomadland also won the audience award, but its domination stopped there.
Frances McDormand surprisingly lost in the best actress race to Miss Juneteenth’s Nicole Beharie, while Riz Ahmed picked up the best actor award for Sound of Metal. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who played Malcolm X in One Night in Miami was named the best breakthrough actor.
Watchmen and I May Destroy You came out victorious in the TV categories and were rewarded as the best long-form and short-form series. Gotham Tributes were dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Steve McQueen, and Ryan Murphy.

]]>This critically acclaimed drama stars the two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand and follows the adventures of a woman in her sixties who decides to embark on a journey through the American West after losing everything she has.
Nomadland received universal critical acclaim after its premiere in Venice, and it’s set to show at several more film festivals this fall, including the upcoming New York Film Festival. Its theatrical release date in North America is set for December 4th.
Regina King’s One Night in Miami and Tracey Deer’s Beans were also in the running for People’s Choice Award in Toronto. This year’s festival took place between September 10–21, and most films were available to critics on an online streaming platform.
