In addition to beating the likes of Mank, Minari, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to win the biggest award of the night, Nomadland came out victorious in two more categories. Frances McDormand became one of seven people in history to win her third acting Oscar while Chloé Zhao became the second female filmmaker to walk away with the best director trophy.

Another historic moment came when Anthony Hopkins managed to beat the late Chadwick Boseman in the best actor category and become the oldest person to win this award. The supporting acting categories were much easier to predict and the awards went to the expected winners—Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Youn Yuh-jung (Minari).

The list of major winners at the ceremony included Emerald Fennell (best original screenplay for Promising Young Woman), Thomas Vinterberg (best international film for Another Round), and Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller (best adapted screenplay for The Father). Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Sound of Metal, and Mank were amongst the movies with two awards, mostly in technical categories.

Nomadland will be competing for the most prestigious award of the night—best film—alongside The Father, The Mauritanian, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. It’s also in the running for best direction (Chloé Zhao) and best leading actress (Frances McDormand).

This year’s award season is in full steam, and one of the major ceremonies just unveiled their list of award contenders. The nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards are in, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always is leading the way with a total of seven nods.

Eliza Hittman’s latest film will be in the running for the best feature award, but it will have a tough competition in First Cow, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, and Nomadland. The best director nominations mostly mirrored the best film category, with Promising Young Woman replacing Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and four out of five nominations going to female directors.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari is also a major contender with nominations in six separate categories. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Nomadland were right behind, with five nominations each.

What makes this year’s Independent Spirit Awards unique is the introduction of television categories. Some of the shows that scored nominations in this field are Unorthodox, I May Destroy You, and Little America. The list of winners at this ceremony was pretty colorful, and it didn’t give us any significant repeat winners—in addition to being named as the best feature of the year, Nomadland also won the audience award, but its domination stopped there.

Frances McDormand surprisingly lost in the best actress race to Miss Juneteenth’s Nicole Beharie, while Riz Ahmed picked up the best actor award for Sound of Metal. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who played Malcolm X in One Night in Miami was named the best breakthrough actor.

Watchmen and I May Destroy You came out victorious in the TV categories and were rewarded as the best long-form and short-form series. Gotham Tributes were dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Steve McQueen, and Ryan Murphy.

The film festival season is in full swing, and one movie is winning every award in sight. After picking up the Golden Lion in Venice, Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award.

This critically acclaimed drama stars the two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand and follows the adventures of a woman in her sixties who decides to embark on a journey through the American West after losing everything she has.

Nomadland received universal critical acclaim after its premiere in Venice, and it’s set to show at several more film festivals this fall, including the upcoming New York Film Festival. Its theatrical release date in North America is set for December 4th.

Regina King’s One Night in Miami and Tracey Deer’s Beans were also in the running for People’s Choice Award in Toronto. This year’s festival took place between September 10–21, and most films were available to critics on an online streaming platform.

The British Academy is the latest organization to unveil its list of nominations for the annual film awards. The BAFTA nominations are finally in, and Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and Sarah Gavron’s Rocks are leading the way with seven nominations each.

Nomadland will be competing for the most prestigious award of the night—best film—alongside The Father, The Mauritanian, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. It’s also in the running for best direction (Chloé Zhao) and best leading actress (Frances McDormand).

Rocks owes many of its nominations to the special categories that recognize British talent. It’s in the running for outstanding British film and outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer, but it scored a couple of general nominations, such as best director and original screenplay.

The list of major contenders at this year’s ceremony also includes The Father, Mank, Minari, and Promising Young Woman, with six nominations each. The Dig and The Mauritanian also managed to win over BAFTA voters and ended up scoring five nominations.

The 74th British Academy Film Awards will take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 11th.

The awards season is slowly heating up, and the first major front-runners in the race for the Oscars are already emerging. Nomadland is leading the way after another big win at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
