In 2019, after three seasons on Netflix, the reboot of the classic 1975 Norman Lear sitcom was canceled before moving to Pop a few months later for Season 4 which aired earlier this year.

According to sources, series producer Sony Pictures Television is shopping the series to other outlets.

One Day at a Time follows three generations of Cuban-American family with Justina Machado playing a newly-single mom and military veteran who raises two children (Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz) with the help of her mother (Rita Moreno) and her building manager (Todd Grinnell). Stephen Toblowsky also stars in the series.

Season 4 of the show was cut short due to the pandemic and was broadcast on Pop and TV Land. CBS also aired episodes starting in October.

The new version of the show was co-created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, who also served as co-showrunners. One Day at a Time was executive produced by Lear, Michael Garcia, and Brent Miller.

Season 4 of One Day at a Time premiered on Pop on March 24th, but its production was brought to a halt before it aired due to the coronavirus crisis. Six episodes were filmed so far and the masterminds behind it are currently working on a fully-animated new episode.

Showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett described the upcoming animated special as an exciting opportunity to present the Alvarez family in a colorful new way.

“As we all know, it’s hard to keep One Day at a Time off the air. During this unprecedented time, we wanted to find a way to keep our family – on camera and behind the scenes – together and create more entertaining content for our fans who are self-distancing at home,” said Kellett in a statement.

The Everybody Loves Raymond star is the sitcom’s first guest star for its forthcoming fourth season. 

The casting announcement was made via the show’s social media accounts. 

A picture of Romano alongside series stars s Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Todd Grinnell, and Stephen Tobolowsky, creators Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, and producers Norman Lear and Brent Miller, was captioned with, “The first live taping of the new season is tomorrow AND our friend Ray Romano is joining us as a special guest star for the premiere. Welcome to the fam!”

Per the official character description, Romano is set to play Brian, “a 2020 US Census taker who comes to the Alvarez household to interview the family.”

One Day at a Time, and saluted the great cast for filling this show with so much heart and warmth and love, that it truly felt like home. They made it clear it wasn’t easy to cancel this critically acclaimed sitcom, but the numbers just weren’t there.

“We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day at a Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season,” read statement released by Netflix.

One Day at a Time followed everyday-lives of a Cuban family living in the US and addressed many pressing issues over its three-season run – including racism, immigration, coming out, PTSD and depression.
