Kathleen Kennedy, the producer behind the franchise, reportedly wants to make “big, bold” changes including having a woman in the starring role. Waller-Bridge is already part of the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, in which she reportedly plays a sidekick to archaeology professor Indiana Jones.

It remains unclear if Waller-Bridge’s character, described as a female version of Jones, will take the spotlight in Indiana Jones 5 or if the movie will set the stage for her to star in a potential sixth entry in the franchise.

Indiana Jones 5 will serve as the sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie has been in development for some time now and saw a number of behind-the-scenes changes. This included creator Steven Spielberg stepping down as a director and taking the producer role while James Mangold took over the directorial duties.

The movie was initially set to hit theaters in 2019, but several setbacks, including Harrison Ford’s injury, forced the studio to move the release date to July 29, 2022. The filming kicked off in June 2021 and is still underway.

While the feature received mixed reviews, it was a box office hit, earning $487 million worldwide. There was an interest in a sequel by Pitt and Jolie, but the second movie was never made due to a lack of great script.

Waller-Bridge’s acclaimed series Fleabag follows a 30-year-old woman as she struggles to come to terms with the death of her friend and the end of her relationship. Fleabag remains unnamed throughout the series although the relationship she holds with the audience is intimate. In fact, Waller-Bridge often breaks the fourth wall by making cheeky side-remarks directly to the camera.

For the entire first season, we are lead to believe that it is just us that’s in on Fleabag’s secret. In season two, however, we meet the Hot Priest. He not only notices that Fleabag speaks to us but even breaks the fourth wall himself.

In her BAFTA Television session, Waller-Bridge explains her decision to have Hot Priest speak directly to the camera.

“[Fleabag] has a relationship with the camera the whole way through and it was interesting to have somebody who has a similar thing,” she said. “He’s mirrored ’cause he has God. And she’s witnessed by the camera the whole way through and in the end, the big question for her is whether or not she can let go of the camera.

“And he’s witnessed by God the whole time and is always having to check into that the whole time. And in the end he has the same question, so I just felt like it would be a really good way to mirror each other’s journeys.”

Danny Boyle was attached to the film — which is set to be Daniel Craig’s last as 007 — but the Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker pulled out due to creative differences.

His departure meant that writer John Hodge went with him and the screenplay was left incomplete. Veteran Bond screenwriters, Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, were brought back in to take over.

According to The Observer, creator of Killing Eve, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is now coming on board to “liven up” the script. She reportedly met with Craig and discussed “how to improve the script of Bond 25, which the 007 actor felt needed some ‘polishing,’ by introducing more humor and the offbeat style of writing she is best known for.”

Bond 25 is expected next year, with Beasts of No Nation filmmaker, Cary Jo Fukunaga, directing a cast that includes Ben Whishaw, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Léa Seydoux, and Rami Malek.
