Phoebe Waller-Bridge is no longer part of Amazon’s TV adaptation of the 2005 action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. According to Deadline, Waller-Bridge, who was supposed to play the lead role alongside Donald Glover, exited the project due to “creative differences.”

Despite Waller-Bridge bowing out, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series is still expected to enter production next year. Glover remains attached as the male lead, co-creator, and executive producer, while the search for a new female lead is already underway.

This isn’t the first attempt at making the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series. Back in 2007, ABC ordered a pilot that starred Martin Henderson and Jordana Brewster in the lead roles. However, the project wasn’t picked up as the episode was panned by critics.

Directed by Doug Liman, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith film stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a married couple who has issues in their relationship due to their uneventful and boring life. In reality, however, they are both highly-trained killers but kept that as a secret. The truth about their real line of work surfaces after they are hired to kill each other.

While the feature received mixed reviews, it was a box office hit, earning $487 million worldwide. There was an interest in a sequel by Pitt and Jolie, but the second movie was never made due to a lack of great script.
