The casting process for The Superman: Legacy has gone on for months, but only a handful of actors made it to the final stage and tested in front of DC co-chairs Peter Safran and James Gunn. The last casting call reportedly included three actors auditioning in full Superman attire.

Corenswet and Brosnahan were eventually cast in the lead roles, and DC is still looking for a supporting cast, including an actor who would play Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor.

David Corenswet was one of the front-runners for the role since the start of the auditioning process, despite being a relative newcomer in Hollywood. This marks his first major leading role after he starred in Ryan Murphy’s shows The Politician and Hollywood and movies Pearl and Look Both Ways.

Rachel Brosnahan is already a well-established actress, best known for her breakthrough role in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She won a Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG Award for the leading turn in this series, which wrapped up this year after five seasons.

Helen & Teacher will be set during Keller’s time at Radcliffe College of Harvard University when her bond with Sullivan was tested time and time again. Her rapidly expanding worldview and sexual awakening put her into conflict with her more conservative teacher, and their relationship was never the same again.

This promising biopic will be directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice), who’s excited about making a film that shows Keller’s relevance, brilliance, and unbreakable spirit, and explores her life from a different angle.

“Most people only know of Helen Keller’s story from when she was a child. Helen & Teacher will look at her as a young adult when she developed a radical, world-changing political voice,” said Westmoreland in a statement.

Helen & Teacher is a deeply personal project for Millicent Simmonds, who happens to be Keller’s distant relative. She rose to prominence with the roles in A Quiet Place movies, while Rachel Brosnahan is best known for her Emmy-winning turn in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
