In the first Avatar film, Weaver played Sully’s mentor and the head of the Avatar Program Dr. Grace Augustine. She advocated for peaceful relations with the Na’vi, but she was tragically shot during conflict and died before getting a chance to be transferred into an avatar body.

Dr. Grace may not be back in Avatar: The Way of Water, but Weaver will return through the magic of motion-capture technology. She’ll play Kiri, Jake and Neytiri’s adoptive teenage daughter, and embodying this character was quite a challenge for the actress.

“I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents. I certainly do. I was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim,” Weaver told Empire.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released on December 16, and it also stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, and Michelle Yeoh.

The crime thriller has Edgerton starring as the master gardener of an American estate who confronts his dark past. Weaver will play his employer, a wealthy dowager, who insists that Edgerton’s character takes on her troubled great-niece as a new apprentice. And thus, chaos occurs.

“When the idea first started it was one of my male protagonists but then these two women intervened and it became something more complex and unique,” Schrader said in a statement via Variety.

Edgerton was recently in The Green Knight and The Underground Railroad. He’s set to star in Bright and The Brutalist. Weaver’s credits include Alien, Ice Storm, and the Avatar franchise.

The film is based on the original screenplay by Schrader and he’s also set to direct. Amanda Crittenden, Scott LaStaiti, and David Gonzales will produce. Luisa Law, Linda Ujuk, and Dale Roberts will executive produce.

Aykroyd discussed the upcoming sequel during an appearance on The Greg Hill Show and talked about how much fun he had working with both new and original cast members – including Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts, who are done shooting their parts.

“Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation. It hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars, and players, and actors, and characters,” said the actor.

Ghostbusters 2020 will be directed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, who will return as a producer. It’s set to premiere on July 10th, 2020 with Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd joining the original cast.

Weaver played Dana Barrett in the first and second Ghostbusters films — a woman who required the services of the squad to some supernatural activity in her apartment.

With Jason Reitman taking over his father Ivan’s series 30 years later, it seems as though the 69-year-old actress is set to return.

“It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” she said.

Her words offer hope that she will be joined by the rest of the crew that includes Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson.

Production on Ghostbusters 3 is expected to start next month in Canada for 15 weeks, with the film out on July 10th, 2020.
