Sigourney Weaver played Dr. Grace Augustine in the first Avatar movie, and her character will be very different the second time around. She revealed details about her character in Avatar: The Way of Water, and it turns out she’s playing Jake and Neytiri’s adoptive teenage daughter.

In the first Avatar film, Weaver played Sully’s mentor and the head of the Avatar Program Dr. Grace Augustine. She advocated for peaceful relations with the Na’vi, but she was tragically shot during conflict and died before getting a chance to be transferred into an avatar body.

Dr. Grace may not be back in Avatar: The Way of Water, but Weaver will return through the magic of motion-capture technology. She’ll play Kiri, Jake and Neytiri’s adoptive teenage daughter, and embodying this character was quite a challenge for the actress.

“I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents. I certainly do. I was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim,” Weaver told Empire.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released on December 16, and it also stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, and Michelle Yeoh.
