Many of the year’s most anticipated films premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but only one could take the People’s Choice Award home. That honor belonged to Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, his most personal project to date.

TIFF’s People’s Choice Award is voted online by audience members. The Fabelmans managed to defeat Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to take this prestigious accolade home.

Spielberg thanked festival director Cameron Bailey, TIFF staff, and Universal Pictures for making this possible, and gave a special shout-out to the movie fans in Toronto, who made his visit to the festival unforgettable.

“I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto! This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” said Spielberg in a statement.

TIFF’s People’s Choice Award has long been considered the starting gun in the Oscars race because many of the past recipients went on to win or be nominated for the best picture. In the past ten years alone, 12 Years a Slave, Green Book, and Nomadland won the best picture, while the rest of the winners received nominations for this award.

Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are some of the finest filmmakers of their time, but their movies could use more women.

The claim has been made by Juliette Binoche who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The English Patient.

Binoche praised both directors and said she would love to work with them on future projects. “Spielberg is more of a men’s director, like Scorsese actually. Even if I find their approach to cinema to be very commercial, they have a fabulous technique which they own completely, and they’re storytellers. But their films lack women,” she told Variety.

The French beauty standby confidently behind her opinions, expressing as much to The Irishman director and his West Side Story counterpart a few years ago. “He has a very feminine side of himself, but for me, he doesn’t explore it [in his work],” she said of Scorsese who is renowned for making films that focus on the mafia and gangsters.

As for Spielberg, the Both Sides of the Blade actress was forced to turn down three working opportunities due to scheduling conflicts.

“The first time was for Indiana Jones 3, because I was doing The Lovers on the Bridge with Leos Carax. The second time, for Schindler’s List, I was pregnant, and then for the dinosaurs [Jurassic Park], I had already committed to Three Colors: Blue. It would have been amusing to do Jurassic Park to see how [Spielberg] makes the film.”

Everyone’s favorite alien has finally returned back to earth to reconnect with his human friend Elliot, played by Henry Thomas in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film.

“The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people’s minds and hearts,” Thomas said.

While A Holiday Reunion is only 4 minutes long, we’re excited to see Elliot as a grown-up who’s married with two kids of his own that bare a striking resemblance to a younger version of Elliot and Gertie, played by Drew Barrymore. The film plugs Xfinity and it resembles the original.

“It’s called the Internet,” Elliott’s son says to E.T. “A lot’s changed since you were here,” Elliot says.

Viewers of NBC’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade caught a two-minute glimpse of the promotional video and a 30-second clip is being shown at movie theatres during the holiday weekend. In total there are nine videos, and they were shown on Thanksgiving day on NBC primetime and NFL games on CBS and Fox and they will continue playing through January 5.

E.T was a huge success at the box office and it went on to win four Oscars and gross over $359 million in the U.S and $304 million internationally.

It’s a wrap on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

The prolific director took to social media, sharing a few thoughts upon to end of production on September 28. His message was shared via the official Twitter account of production company Amblin.

“This has been a journey without precedence: a joyful, stunning, moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world’s greatest musicals,” Spielberg wrote. “My brilliantly talented, fiercely committed, generous and apparently inexhaustible cast and crew of hundreds have given our film everything they’ve got, and already I can say that the film we’ll be releasing on December 18, 2020, owes everything to them as does its immensely grateful director.”

Set in 1950s New York City, Spielberg added: “The city lent us its beauty and its energy, and we drew deeply upon its grand, multicultural, multifaceted spirit. To the people of New York and Paterson, thanks not only for putting up with our trailers, tents, cranes, and mid-street dance sequences; from the bottom of my heart, thanks for the warm welcomes we encountered everywhere, from pedestrians and policemen and neighborhoods and kids. We couldn’t have made our musical without you.”

West Side Story stars Ansel Elgort (Tony), Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ariana DeBose (Anita), and David Alvarez (Bernardo).

Steven Spielberg’s second project produced by Apple’s forthcoming streaming service is here.

The acclaimed director teams up again with actor Tom Hanks for the third installment in the Band of Brothers and The Pacific saga. But unlike the first two parts, which aired on HBO, the Masters of the Air WWII miniseries is coming to Apple TV+.

After HBO passed on the project, a statement was released by the premium cable network, which simply read: “After careful consideration, HBO decided not to move forward with Masters of the Air. We look forward to our next collaboration with Playtone and Amblin.”

Gary Goetzman, Spielberg and Hanks’ collaborator on the two previous installments, will also executive produce, with Hanks and Goetzman’s Playtone and Spielberg’s Amblin Television producing the series with Apple.

Apple TV+ launches on November 1.
