]]>Way is the creator of the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy. Way wrote the comic books that the series is based on and now has his own fan base for his written work.
When The Umbrella Academy landed on Netflix, it gained a lot of attention among My Chemical Romance Fans (MCR), who knew Way as the band’s singer. As it turns out, comic book writing has always been Way’s calling.
“A lot of people at the time, right before Umbrella came out, knew me as a singer in a band,” he shared at Virtual Comic-Con.
“But I had this long history with comics, and kind of making my own and getting published at 15 and using my grandmother’s typewriter. But then I went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and my major was cartooning. So I had all these comic book classes, and in my senior year I interned at DC – I interned there for like a year.”
Way still had a passion for music and MCR was his creation. He reflected on the band’s rise to fame: “This band that I had started, really started to take off. Then all of us quit our jobs and we get in the van and we just start touring.”
Season two of The Umbrella Academy will premier on Netflix July 31st.

When asked about the ending, the show’s creator simply beams and confesses that all he wanted to do was find a “really good cliffhanger.”
“Yeah, it ends horribly!” Steve told Entertainment Weekly. “What I really wanted to do was find a really good cliffhanger. I also thought it was too easy for this family to come together in eight days and save the world. It has to be trickier than that.”
Steve’s priority was not saving the world but saving the “wonderfully
He continued: “I wanted to have an ending where they sort of came together as a family, but they didn’t achieve the greater goal of saving the world. If we get a second season, we’ll see how they’re gonna end up. These guys aren’t dead, but we don’t know what happens.”
He added: “I thought it told a lot about who this family was, which is they couldn’t quite get it together. Their wonderfully dysfunctional family couldn’t quite win the day. I thought that was very telling for the season.”
