]]>Lulu Wang’s heartfelt drama managed to beat the likes of Clemency, A Hidden Life, Marriage Story, and Uncut Gems to win the top honor at this ceremony. This wasn’t The Farewell’s only major award. Zhao Shu-zhen picked up the best supporting actress trophy.
Uncut Gems was also one of the biggest winners of the night, and it came out victorious in three categories – best director (Josh and Benny Safdie), best male lead (Adam Sandler), and best editing (Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie).
The Independent Spirit Awards took place on February 8th at Santa Monica Pier, with Aubrey Plaza serving as a host.

]]>Multiple outlets confirm that the film from helmers Josh and Benny Safdie has generated a whopping $18.8 million since opening on Wednesday, setting a new box office record for the indie distributor A24.
The film bumped the previous record holder, Midsommar with $11 million.
The suspense thriller is set in New York’s Diamond District follows Sandler who starts as a compulsive gambler attempting to get out of debt. It also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Kevin Garnett, and Idina Menzel.
Critics have awarded the film with a 92% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

]]>Uncut Gems is about an NYC jeweler in relentless pursuit of the big win. Sandler plays the lead role of Howard, who must balance his high-stake business with his family life and the various other struggles life throws at him.
To promote the new movie, Sandler appeared on The Howard Stern Show. During his appearance, he spoke about his desire to win an Oscar and teased that he would make a movie that’s “so bad on purpose” if he doesn’t win.
“If I don’t get it, I’m going to f***ing come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay,” he said. “That’s how I get them.”
The National Board of Review has since named Sandler Best Actor, which has raised his chances at the Acadamy Awards. Then again, he will be competing with Joaquin Phoenix’s stellar performance in Joker, so Uncut Gems will have to be flawless,

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also did pretty great at this ceremony, and received awards for best director (Quentin Tarantino) and best-supporting actor (Brad Pitt). Uncut Gems also picked up two awards, in the best actor (Adam Sandler) and best original screenplay (Safdie Brothers and Ronald Bronstein) categories.
The National Board of Review also unveiled the list of their top 10 films of the year, which included the likes of Marriage Story, Ford v Ferrari, and Knives Out.

]]>The film, which premiered to great acclaimed at the Telluride Film Festival and again at the Toronto International Film Festival hails from the Safdie brothers.
Uncut Gems follows Howard Ratner (Sandler) a New York City jeweler to the rich and famous must find a way to pay his debts when his merchandise is taken from one of his top sellers and girlfriend. The trailer show’s Ratner acquiring a rare Ethiopian opal with mysterious powers. Seduced by the stone, he finds himself involved in run-ins with gangsters and even a nightclub brawl with the Weeknd, who plays himself in the film.
The film also stars Idina Menzel as Dinah, Ratner’s wife. Eric Bogosian, Judd Hirsch, Mike Francesa, Julia Fox, and Pom Klementieff round out the cast.
