Hulu is developing a TV series based on the 1987’s drama Less Than Zero. The movie, which starred Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, and Robert Downey Jr., was itself loosely based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis.

Ellis will serve as an executive producer, alongside Craig Wright (Greenleaf, Lost, Tyrant) who will also pen the script for the series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV adaptation will follow a college freshman who returns to his hometown for Christmas holidays looking to spend time with his ex-girlfriend and his friend who struggles with drug addiction. The series will be also looking to “explore the culture of wealthy, decadent youth in Los Angeles.”

Directed by Marek Kanievska, Less Than Zero received mixed reviews upon its release, but the critics praised the performance from the three lead actors. Bret Easton Ellis publicly spoke about his dislike for the movie after the release, but since then has changed his mind.

Ellis wrote a sequel to Less Than Zero novel, which was titled Imperial Bedrooms and released in 2011. The sequel novel takes place 25 years after the first, with the trio of original characters playing a prominent role in the story.
