For the first time in 64 years, the Eurovision Song contest has been cancelled. Organizers confirmed that due to the spread of the Coronavirus the contest will not be held this year.

The contest was due to take place in Rotterdam after The Netherlands won the 2019 contest. More than 200 million people tune in each year to watch the singing contest, which includes countries from all over Europe (as well as Australia).

“It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam,” the official statement said. “Over the past few weeks, we have explored many alternative options to allow the Eurovision Song Contest to go ahead. However, the uncertainty created by the spread of Covid-19 throughout Europe – and the restrictions put in place by the governments of the participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities – means the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has taken the difficult decision that it is impossible to continue with the live event as planned.”

The announcement also stated that talks about hosting the event next year in Rotterdam are underway.
