CODA was one of the biggest underdogs at the start of the awards season, but that didn’t stop it from finishing the race in the top spot. The Apple TV+ drama won the best picture at the Oscars on Sunday night, becoming the first streaming movie to do so.
CODA entered the race with a total of three nominations and managed to walk away with all of them. In addition to becoming the first film with a predominately deaf leading cast to win the best picture, it also picked up awards for best supporting actor (Troy Kotsur) and best adapted screenplay (Sian Heder).
Despite missing out on the best picture award, Jane Campion still made history with The Power of the Dog, becoming the third woman to win the award for best director. It was also a big night for Dune, which topped the list of winners with a total of six awards, mostly in technical categories.
Acting awards were pretty easy to predict, and they all went to clear front-runners. Kotsur was joined by Will Smith, who picked up his first Oscar for King Richard, while Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) won awards for best leading and supporting actress, respectively.
The 94th Academy Awards took place on March 27 with Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes hosting the ceremony.
