Awards season is heating up and the American Film Institute is the latest organization to announce its list of honorees for 2022. Their list of best films of 2022 includes the likes of Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis, while the rookie series The Bear and Severance made it to the list of the best TV shows.

The AFI Awards come in the form of a list that includes 10 outstanding films and 10 outstanding TV programs deemed culturally and artistically representative of this past year. There’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the AFI Awards because their list of the top ten films of the year often mirrors Academy Awards nominations for the best picture.

AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said they wanted to shine a light upon excellence in storytelling and the collaborators who bring these stories to the screen, especially as the film industry tries to recover from one of its most difficult times in history.

“This year, more than ever, celebrating the community of artists that realize these dreams is particularly meaningful – as they have lifted our spirits through the most challenging of times and proven the power of this great art form,” said Gazzale in a statement.

AFI Awards will be given to honorees at the private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills on January 13, 2023.
