The Gotham Awards returned to New York last night to celebrate the best independent films of the past year, and the list of winners is pretty impressive. Celine Song’s Past Lives won the award for the best feature, while the Netflix series Beef dominated television categories.
Past Lives faced tough competition in the running for best feature but still managed to come out victorious. The list of contenders in this field also included Passages, Reality, Showing Up, and A Thousand and One.
Despite winning the ceremony’s main award, Past Lives wasn’t actually the most decorated film this year. That honor belonged to Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, which won awards for best screenplay and best international feature.
Lily Gladstone (The Unknown Country) and Charles Melton (May December) dominated acting categories, and won awards for the outstanding lead and supporting performance, respectively.
When it comes to the TV categories, Netflix’s limited series Beef was the biggest winner of the night with two awards: breakthrough series under 40 minutes and outstanding performance in a new series (Ali Wong). Historical drama A Small Light won the award for breakthrough series over 40 minutes.
The 2023 Gotham Awards were presented on November 27, and several high-profile films, including Air, Barbie, Ferrari, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, and Rustin, received tribute awards.
