Hugh Hefner, reality television star and founder of the iconic men’s magazine Playboy, had died at the age of 91.

A representative for the boundary-pushing businessman confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE Magazine:

“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones.”

Hefner had lived a well-documented life filled with laughs, luxury, and lots of ladies. He is remembered fondly by fans, colleagues, friends, and family alike. Cooper Hefner, son of Hefner and Chief Creative Officer of Playboy Enterprises, had this to say about his father’s passing:

“My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom. He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history. He will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Crystal, my sister Christie and my brothers David and Marston, and all of us at Playboy Enterprises.”

Upon hearing news of his passing, many celebrities took to social media to express their appreciation for Hefner’s impact on American culture as well. Some had even posed or written for the erotic magazine themselves, making their tributes all the more personal.

Musician, actress, and model Sky Ferriera took to Facebook to discuss her fond memories of posing for the legendary publication last year, when she became the first playmate to direct her own photoshoot.

“RIP Hugh Hefner,” she wrote. “Thanks for letting me be the first [bunny] to do everything on my own terms and follow the footsteps of my favorite ladies.”
