Just days after making Emmy history by being the first person to win six consecutive awards in the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series category, Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus made a sobering announcement; she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The actress took to Twitter to relay the information to fans, also using the statement as an opportunity to advocate for universal healthcare, a topic which has become quite the hot button issue in recent months.

“1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one.  The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

Initially made famous by her role as Elaine in the megahit 90’s sitcom Seinfeld, Louis-Dreyfus has seen enormous success with her most recent show, HBO’s Veep, where she fills the title role as fictional politician Selina Meyer.

The 56-year-old star recently revealed that the show’s upcoming seventh season would be its last. Producers have since confirmed that they will accommodate her treatment needs and schedule in any way necessary throughout the filming of the final season, which has yet to even be written.

Unsurprisingly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is quite popular with co-workers and fans alike. Many former and current costars rushed to share well wishes in the wake of Louis-Dreyfus’ unfortunate news. Fellow Seinfeld star Jason Alexander took to Twitter to share his kind thoughts, tweeting:

“So sorry you have to go thru this, pal, but I know you will prevail. We are here if/when you need and we love you.”
