The fourth season of A Black Lady Sketch Show ended its run this spring, and there’s been a lot of uncertainty about its future ever since. HBO bosses finally addressed the situation and announced the cancelation of this sketch comedy series after four critically acclaimed seasons.

Just like its name suggests, this series was performed by a core cast of black women, led by Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend. Many acclaimed actresses made guest appearances on the show over the years, including Issa Rae, Angela Bassett, Laverne Cox, Nicole Byer, Raven-Symoné, Kelly Rowland, Gabrielle Union, and Wanda Sykes.

Robin Thede, who co-created this series for HBO, confirmed its cancelation in an official statement and thanked all the people who made it possible.

“Thank you to all the immensely talented cast members, guest stars, writers, directors, editors, and crew members who have made A Black Lady Sketch Show an Emmy-winning success. I especially want to recognize the Black women and other women of color who excelled in every department at ABLSS,” said Thede.

HBO said they’re looking forward to continuing their creative collaboration with Thede, and praised her for leaving an indelible legacy not only in sketch, but in television comedy, with A Black Lady Sketch Show.
