Maleficent: Mistress of Evil tops the domestic box office charts in its opening weekend.

The sequel to 2014’s fantasy adventure feature starring Angelina Jolie has opened to the tune of $36 million domestically from 2,790 North American theaters. A disappointing start for the sequel, compared to the original, which hauled almost double in its inaugural outing.

“While it’s a lower opening than we had expected, we do think we have a good start for October with a great window leading into Halloween,” Disney’s president of global distribution Cathleen Taff said. “With great word of mouth, audiences will gravitate to the film.”

Despite its slow opening, the film has earned an A CinemaScore and a 96% Rotten Tomatoes audience average.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil grosses $117 million from 56 international markets, making its total earnings $153 million worldwide.
