A “Gossip Girl” Reboot in Development at HBO Max

Blake Lively and Leighton Meester in "Gossip Girl"

If you’ve been dreaming of revisiting the Upper East Side ever since Gossip Girl wrapped up in 2012, your prayers have finally been answered. HBO Max is currently developing a reboot of the CW’s hit teen drama, which kick-started the careers of Blake Lively and Penn Badgley.

The showrunner of the original series, Joshua Safran, broke the news in a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter. He’ll be in charge of writing and executive producing the show, with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage serving as creators.

It’s highly unlikely we’ll see any of our favorite characters in the new version of Gossip Girl. Safran described it as an extension of the original show, and said they’re interested in exploring this concept in a new landscape, and not redoing it once again.

“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years,” reads the official logline of the new show.
