Aftersun entered the British Independent Film Awards with whooping 16 nominations, so it wasn’t a shocker to see it be crowned as the ceremony’s biggest winner. The critically acclaimed drama picked up seven awards, including the best British independent film.
The emotional drama centers on an 11-year-old girl going on a summer vacation in Turkey with her father and reflecting on their complicated relationship two decades later. It defeated Blue Jean, The Wonder, Living, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande to win the ceremony’s biggest prize – the best British independent film.
It was a huge night for the film’s writer-director Charlotte Wells, who won three extra trophies: best director, best debut director, and best screenplay. Aftersun also came out victorious in several technical categories, including best cinematography, editing, and music supervision.
When it comes to acting categories, Rosy McEwen and Kerrie Hayes won awards for the best lead and supporting performance for their respective roles in Blue Jean. Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance were awarded for their best joint lead performance in The Silent Twins, while Safia Oakley-Green picked up a trophy for her breakthrough performance in The Origin.
The 2022 British Independent Film Awards were held on December 4 at Old Billingsgate in London, with Ben Bailey Smith hosting the ceremony.
