Amazon Abandons Plans for “The Banker’s Wife” TV Adaptation

Cristina Alger’s bestselling novel The Banker’s Wife won’t be coming to television after all. Amazon decided to scrap the project, reportedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting production challenges.

The Banker’s Wife got a straight-to-series order by Amazon in 2019, with eight episodes being planned at the time. Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike was attached to play one of the leading roles early on, while Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) was supposed to direct.

The novel was published in 2018 and tells the story of two women who get involved in the dark world of global finance. Annabel is a young widow who embarks on a dangerous mission to find the truth about the shady business of her late husband and banking insider Matthew. Marina, on the other hand, is an ambitious journalist who works on a story that leads her to dig out the same secrets as Annabel.

Amazon’s decision to abandon the plans for The Banker’s Wife series doesn’t mean the adaptation is entirely dead in the water. Producer Sherry Marsh (Vikings) considers it her passion project and is expected to look for other ways to bring the story to life.

The Banker’s Wife is one of the several TV series that never made it past the pre-production phase due to the coronavirus pandemic. Amazon previously also canceled plans for a series dedicated to the legendary conqueror Hernan Cortes, while HBO and Showtime scrapped Americanah and The President is Missing, respectively.
