Disney+ finally gave Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese its long-expected TV adaptation, but they quickly took it away. This acclaimed fantasy series, which starred Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, has been axed by Disney+ after a single season.

American Born Chinese centered on the journey of the high school student Jin Wang, who finds himself unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods after befriending a new student Sun Wei-Chen, who turns out to be the son of the legendary Monkey King.

In addition to the leads Ben Wang and Jimmy Liu, American Born Chinese also starred Academy Award winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, along with Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu in supporting roles.

American Born Chinese premiered on Disney+ in May last year, and low ratings are most likely the reason behind its cancelation. The streaming giant never officially shared its viewership numbers, but they couldn’t have been extremely high since this series never made it into the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings.

The show’s cancelation was announced shortly after the options on the cast expired, and 20th Television is reportedly planning to shop it elsewhere.
