We can count on the American Film Institute to unveil their list of the best films and TV shows at the end of each year, and they’ve made some pretty great choices this time. Oppenheimer and Barbie led the way in the film field, while The Bear and Succession were amongst the TV honorees.

Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, continued this annual tradition by announcing AFI’s top ten films and series of 2023, and praised them for giving us hope during difficult times.

“AFI is honored to shine a proper light upon these works of art that lift us up and, ultimately, lead us to empathy… We are proud to gather this community of artists together – as one – to celebrate their extraordinary contributions to our time,” said Gazzale in a statement.

The Barbenheimer phenomenon was one of the defining events of 2023, and the films that inspired it made it to AFI’s list for 2023. Oscar-contenders Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, May December, and Poor Things were also among the honorees.

AFI’s list of the best TV shows included Emmy front-runners Succession, Beef, and The Bear. Several rookie series also made the cut, including Jury Duty, The Last of Us, and Poker Face.

AFI Awards will officially be handed out on January 12, 2024, when honorees will gather for a private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
