Several A-list actresses were in consideration for the role of Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming biopic Blonde, but Ana de Armas ended up scoring the role and she describes her casting as “groundbreaking.”

The Golden Globe-nominated actress discussed this project in a recent cover story for Vanity Fair and explained what this makes this project so special.

“I only had to audition for Marilyn once and Andrew [Dominik] said ‘It’s you,’ but I had to audition for everyone else. I always have people I needed to convince. But I knew I could do it. Playing Marilyn was groundbreaking. A Cuban playing Marilyn Monroe. I wanted it so badly,” de Armas told the magazine.

2020 is shaping up to be an amazing year for the Cuban actress, and not only because she’ll get to play one of the biggest Hollywood icons of all time. She kicked the year off by scoring a Golden Globe nomination for Knives Out, and that was only the beginning.

de Armas also landed one of the key roles in the upcoming James Bond film No Time to Die, and she’s also set to star in the crime drama The Night Clerk and the intriguing thriller Deep Water.
