The Venom sequel is one step closer to fruition.

Tom Hardy portrayed the Marvel character who is defined as a Symbiote — an extraterrestrial creature which bonds with a host to survive.

The character of Venom initially appeared in Spider-Man 3 before the Mad Max: Fury Road actor came on board for the role.

The solo film, which debuted in 2018, grossed $856 million worldwide.

While Hardy will be reprising his role in the sequel alongside Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson, Ruben Fleischer will not be returning to the directing chair.

He will, instead, pass the baton to Andy Serkis.

Although best known as an actor in films such as The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, and Black Panther, Serkis has also directed the film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and served as the second unit director for The Hobbit movies.

Venom 2, which is based on a script by Kelly Marcel, is scheduled for release on October 2nd, 2020.
