The acclaimed director James Gray rounded out a pretty impressive cast for his new movie Armageddon Time, and its first trailer is finally here! Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong take lead roles in this deeply personal family drama, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

According to its official logline, Armageddon Time is “a deeply personal story on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the generational pursuit of the American Dream.” It’s Gray’s most personal film to date, and it draws inspiration from his own upbringing in Queens, New York during the 1980s.

Irving and Esther Graff, played by Hathaway and Strong, are inspired by the director’s own parents, while Anthony Hopkins plays Aaron Graff, a version of Gray’s grandfather. Rising star Banks Repeta plays a version of the director’s adolescent self, while the rest of the cast includes Jaylin Webb, Ryan Sell, Dane West, John Diehl, and Jessica Chastain.

Written and directed by Gray, Armageddon Time premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival back in May to a seven-minute standing ovation. It currently holds a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s been described as “a well-acted drama refreshingly free of nostalgia.” Its theatrical premiere is set for October 28.
