Nicole Kidman and Ansel Elgort in "The Goldfinch"

Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Goldfinch is getting its long-awaited film adaptation this year. The first trailer for this promising project arrived, and it sees Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman playing the lead roles.

The Goldfinch tells the story of Theodore Decker (Elgort), whose life turns upside down after his mother dies in a terrorist bombing at an art museum. Wealthy socialite Mrs. Barbour (Kidman) takes him in and tries to comforts him in his grief.

Despite his attempts to move on, Theodore becomes a troubled teenager, who’s struggling with addiction and is constantly haunted by the memory of his mother. The movie borrows its title from Carel Fabritius’ painting, which reminds the main character of the tragic event that changed his life.

The Goldfinch was directed by John Crowley, whose previous film Brooklyn received three Oscar nominations. It’s set to premiere on September 13th, and it will also star Sarah Paulson, Finn Wolfhard, Jeffrey Wright and Luke Wilson.
