Aquaman director James Wan reveals details from a scene he had to cut for being too “weird”.

Speaking with Collider, Wan described a whacky sequence of Aquaman’s (Jason Momoa) escape from a prison run by shark-guards which almost made it in the film. Co-writer Will Beall included the scene in the original scripts. Wan admits that it wasn’t even the producers that cut the scene but it was Wan himself who thought it was just a little too “out there” to make the final cut.

“He had a really quirky out-there [sequence]… it wasn’t the studio, it was me that said, ‘I don’t know if we can have that in there, that’s a bit weird’,” Wan explained.

“As much as I loved it. He had this sequence where… Aquaman has been apprehended by King Orm and he’s been thrown into this dungeon. Like this really awful prison deep in Atlantis. He ends up starting a prison riot, where all the guards are sharks. They were shark-guards, like all shark head…” he continued.

The bizarre sequence concluded with an extreme escape scene with “clouds of blood billowing everywhere”. The blood sends the sharks into a frenzy and Aquaman uses this to his advantage. It all sounds a little extreme.

Aquaman will be released in cinemas December 21.
