“Aquaman” Rules Christmas Day Box Office

Aquaman crosses the $100 million mark on Christmas Day.

The DC superhero feature starring Jason Momoa has had a very merry Christmas. After five days in theaters, Aquaman has grossed $100 million.

Despite considerable competition from Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and Paramount’s Bumblebee, the comic book thriller generated $22 million on Tuesday, which is one of the best Christmas Day hauls and the sixth biggest Christmas Day box office hauls.

Mary Poppins earned $11.6 million bringing its total to $50.3m, followed by Bumblebee that finished third in the domestic box office with $8.9 million. Placing fourth is Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s comedy Holmes & Watson with $6 million. Rounding out the top five is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earning $5.5 million on Tuesday, bringing its domestic total to $73.5 million.

According to Variety, the days between Christmas Day and New Year’s are the busiest furring the year for moviegoing. Last weekend, the North American ticket sales hit $11.383 billion, surpassing the 2016 record of $11.382 billion.
