Recently, it was reported that Lana Wachowski is working on a new sequel to the Matrix with Keanu Reeves in the front, reprising his role as Neo. Now, it turns out they are not alone in the field.

Screenwriter Zak Penn has confirmed on his Twitter account that he is also working on a The Matrix project at Warner Bros. – a separate film. According to him, both project – his and Wachowski – are not reboots.

In the past, Penn wrote the scripts for movies like Ready Player One and X-Men: The Last Stand. According to him, his Matrix script takes place earlier in the timeline of the Matrix-universe. One can assume that if the Wachowski film is indeed a sequel, it will take precedence over Penn’s project which will wait to see how the sequel is doing before being pushed forward.

Production of the Wachowski film is due to start next year. Alongside Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss is also set to come back to the franchise. The script is being written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon, and David Mitchel and Wachowski will also serve as a producer alongside Grant Hill.
