The world is in mourning, as Aretha Franklin, the unmistakable Queen of Soul, has died following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The legendary singer passed away at the age of 76 at her Detroit home on Thursday morning, surrounded by her nearest and dearest.

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,” reads an official statement from the grieving family.

“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters, and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Instagram and Twitter have both been flooded with heartfelt messages of condolences for the family she leaves behind, as well as messages from fans who have thanked her for all she has done for the music industry.

With remarkable hits such as Respect and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, she will always be the original Queen of Soul, and will never be forgotten!

Rest in Peace, Aretha Franklin.
