It’s a true sign of excellence when a movie crosses the coveted $2 billion mark at the global box office and only a handful of films managed to get across the finish line. Avatar: The Way of Water became one of them after 37 days in theatres and it’s the second-fastest movie in history to earn $2 billion globally.

Since its premiere on December 16, The Way of Water grossed $597.9 million domestically, and $1.426 billion overseas, setting many major box office records in its wake. In addition to being the highest-grossing film of 2022, it also earned more money than any movie released during the pandemic era, after scoring the third-largest pandemic era opening behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Way of Water is currently the sixth highest-grossing film in history and only the sixth to earn more than $2 billion, joining the ranks of Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Even before The Way of Water’s record-breaking success, James Cameron announced several more sequels are on the way. Avatar 3 was filmed simultaneously, and it will premiere on December 20, 2024, followed by two more sequels in 2026 and 2028.
