Barbie set many box office records since its release last month, and it’s not leaving theaters anytime soon. Shortly after becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 at the domestic box office, Barbie will officially be returning to Imax with brand-new post-credit scenes this fall.
Barbie wasn’t shown in Imax during its original run because Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer took over the Imax theatres, but that will change pretty soon. Barbie is now getting a one-week Imax release on September 22 in North America and select locations around the world.
Director Greta Gerwig said it’s been “overwhelming, humbling and deeply moving” to see so many people supporting Barbie, and they found a great way to express their gratitude to the film’s passionate fanbase.
“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to Imax, the biggest screen of all. And as a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy,” she said in a statement.
Barbie set several opening weekend milestones when it came out on July 21, and it went on to become the highest-grossing film directed solely by a woman.
