Gotham City is getting a new Batgirl.

Casting for Barbara Gordon is underway and Leslie Grace (In the Heights) and Haley Lu Richardson (Five Feet Apart) are the top contenders for the upcoming HBO Max superhero film.

Testing for the role has begun and Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and Zoey Deutch (Zombieland: Double Tap, Why Him?) are also in the running.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will be directing Batgirl and the screenplay was written by Christina Hodson. Kristin Burr is producing.

The film will premiere on HBO Max, making it one of the first major DC projects to exclusively stream on the platform.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we do know that Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, will be playing the character wearing the cape. Gordon was first introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane and she’s the most established version of Batgirl.
