We are finally able to see how the newest addition to the DC animated movies universe looks like since the first trailer for Batman: Gotham by Gaslight just went online. Announced during San Diego Comic-Con, Gotham by Gaslight will be based on the graphic novel of the same name in which Batman faces Jack the Ripper. Although the official release date for this animated movie hasn’t been revealed, it will certainly come out at some point in 2018. Check out the trailer for the 30th film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series below.

Released in 1989, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first Elseworlds story. In such stories, DC heroes are taken from their world and brought to the alternate realities or timelines. If we are to judge by the trailer, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight will stay true to the source material and bring the DC fans lots of high packed, R rated action. Bruce Greenwood reprising his role as Batman, while Jennifer Carpenter will voice Selina Kyle and Anthony Head will be featured as Alfred Pennyworth.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is also a chance for the DC Comics to fix the mistakes they have made with the last Batman animated movie, Batman: The Killing Joke. Although The Killing Joke is regarded as one of the best Batman stories ever published, the animated movie received significant criticism and didn’t sit well with the fans.

Unlike DC’s live-action movies, which are facing ups and downs on the regular basis, the company’s animated movies mostly received widespread acclaims (not counting previously mentioned The Killing Joke). Besides the upcoming Batman animated film, DC also plans to release Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay in the spring of 2018 and the first part of an adaptation of The Death of Superman in late 2018.
