There will be no shortage of Batman prequel stories even after Gotham wraps up its fifth and final season. Epix announced on Wednesday that they gave 10-episodes straight-to-series order to Pennyworth, a prequel story which will revolve around Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

This series comes from Gotham’s showrunner Bruno Heller and producer/director Danny Cannon. Production for Pennyworth is scheduled to begin later this year with a premiere date set for 2019.

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,” said Michael Wright, President, Epix. “We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny – along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon – on this fantastic origin story.”

“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate,” Heller and Cannon added.

According to Deadline, this prequel series will be set in 1960’s London and will follow Alfred Pennyworth as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne.

Pennyworth isn’t being considered to be a spinoff of Gotham despite Heller and Cannon’s involvement and will be set in a different universe.

Gotham, on the other hand, recently received a fifth and final season order from Fox on Tuesday. Season five will have 13 episodes and should follow Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman.
