After Ruby Rose dropped out of the lead of Batwoman in May, the CW was left searching for a replacement and they found their new lead with Javicia Leslie.

Leslie is set to play Ryan Wilder, described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.” The character is nothing like Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane. Ryan spent years as a drug runner, developing bad habits and running from the GCPD, and she doesn’t have any good influences in her life. Currently, she’s living in her van with her plant and she’s a highly skilled and undisciplined fighter. She’s not a stereotypical All-American hero and she’s an out lesbian.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said.

Rose was also delighted by Leslie’s casting, “This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!” she wrote on Instagram.

Leslie starred in the television shows God Friended Me and The Family Business as well as the film Always a Bridesmaid.

Batwoman‘s set to return for the second season in January on the CW.
