Barbie has been ruling the box office for a whole month after its release, but its reign is coming to an end. DC’s new superhero movie Blue Beetle managed to dethrone it with $25.4 million earned domestically, despite having one of DCā€™s lowest debuts of all time.

Blue Beetle centers on a recent college graduate Jaime Reyes, who finds himself unexpectedly becoming a symbiotic host for a mysterious alien scarab. Heā€™s bestowed with a suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, which he uses to become a superhero known as Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle is led by the Cobra Kai star Xolo MaridueƱa and its supporting cast includes Adriana Barraza, DamiƔn AlcƔzar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez.

Blue Beetle was projected to gross $25ā€“32 million domestically during its opening weekend and it met the expectations, with $25.4 million earned in the United States and Canada. It also grossed $18 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $43.4 million.

Despite becoming the first film to surpass Barbie at the domestic box office, Blue Beetle continues a concerning trend for DC. It had one of the softest starts in the history of the DC Cinematic Universe, and the critical response has been pretty lukewarm, continuing the trend set by Black Adam, The Flash, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
