Opening weekend box office estimate for Todd Phillips’ Joker is the biggest preview number since The Lion King pulled in $23 million in July.

That’s right — Joker is officially dominating the box office earning $13.3 million on Thursday night in North America with Friday looking at an increased $39.8 million. Estimated are that Joker is heading for a record-breaking $90 million opening domestically and a worldwide opening between $188-$194 million.

“Weeks of speculation as to Joker’s opening weekend performance and its status as one of the most talked about movies of the year have made the acclaimed (and controversial) film a must-see cinematic event,” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

The R rated stars Phoenix as the titular psychopathic criminal. Also starring are Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, and Marc Maron.
