Joel Edgerton really made a splash with his directorial debut The Gift, and it seems he’s headed for the Oscar glory with the follow-up to this surprise hit. The trailer for his next project Boy Erased just dropped, and it looks like another intriguing and gut-wrenching story.

Edgerton’s sophomore film stars Lucas Hedges as Jared, the son of a Baptist preacher, who comes out to his family. Instead of supporting him, Jared’s religious parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) decide to “cure” him of his homosexuality. The young man has to choose between going to a gay conversion therapy program or losing everyone he holds dear.

The upcoming movie is based on Garrard Conley’s book titled Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family. It’s an emotional tale of a young man from Arkansas who was outed as gay during his freshman year of college. Conley’s memoir was released to critical acclaim and something tells us the same thing will happen to its movie adaptation.

Boy Erased will premiere on November 2, just in time to create enough Oscar buzz. Hedges will be the one carrying the movie on his shoulders in the first lead role of his career. He rose to prominence in 2016 thanks to the Academy Award-nominated performance in Manchester by the Sea. Hedges starred in another two Best Picture contenders just a year later – Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
