“Boyz N the Hood” Director John Singleton Dies at 51

Trailblazing director John Singleton, who made his directorial debut with the 1991 classic Boyz n the Hood, passed away at age 51. He received two nominations for an Academy Award and numerous other accolades during his three-decade-long career.

According to an official statement released by his family, Singleton passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. He was placed under intensive care after suffering a stroke on April 17 but was eventually removed from life support.

“We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time,” read statement by director’s family.

John Singleton rose to prominence thanks to his first film Boyz n the Hood, and went on to direct Poetic Justice, Shaft and 2 Fast 2 Furious. Many Hollywood stars sent thoughts and prayers to his family after the news of his passing made the headlines, including Angela Bassett, Taraji P. Henson, Samuel L. Jackson, Regina King and Ice Cube.
