Brendan Fraser has been searching for the right lead role since winning his Oscar earlier this year, and he finally found what he was looking for. He’ll play his first major post-Oscar role in Searchlight’s upcoming drama Rental Family.

This film will center on a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo, who embarks on an unexpected journey of self-discovery after being hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental-family company. The roles he plays in other people’s lives help him gain a new outlook on his own.

Rental Family hails from the Beef helmer Hikari, who’s been developing this project since 2019. He’s also coming on board as a producer alongside Shin Yamaguchi, Eddie Vaisman, and Julia Lebedev of Sight Unseen Productions.

Fraser experienced quite a career renaissance in recent years, largely thanks to his role in Darren Aronofsky’s drama The Whale. He received numerous awards for his lead performance in this film, including the Academy Award for best actor earlier this year.

Following the success of The Whale, Fraser went on to star in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone. He’s also attached to the comedy Brothers, led by Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage.
