Two-time Emmy-winning actor Andre Braugher passed away after a brief illness at the age of 61. Tributes poured in for the star of Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, whose career in Hollywood spanned over three decades.

Braugher rise to prominence started with his debut film role in the 1989 film Glory alongside Denzel Washington, and he went on to find acclaim as both a dramatic and comedic actor in the decades to come.

Braugher became a household name while playing Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street and won his first Emmy for this role. He went on to star in Gideon’s Crossing, Hack, Thief, and Men of a Certain Age, before experiencing a true career renaissance with the role of Captain Raymond Holt in the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine executive producers, including co-creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur, bid farewell to Braugher in an emotional statement and said they’re grateful for the time they had with him.

“He was one of the most talented dramatic actors in history, and then he decided to try comedy, and he was instantly one of the funniest people ever to do it. But even greater than his acting talent was the happiness and joy he brought to those around him,” reads their statement.

Braugher’s final series The Residence remains unfinished after a strike-related production shutdown, and only four episodes have been filmed so far.
